Big Barn Dialogues
The Big Barn Dialogues is a high-level, invitation-only forum focused on U.S.–China relations, held annually every June. The Baucus Institute brings 4 to 6 students to the Dialogues as participants and note-takers.

About the Big Barn Dialogues
Organized by the Rieschel Foundation since 2019, the Big Barn Dialogues have brought together a strong, knowledgeable group of representatives from the public and private sectors, academics, policy leadership, military, and technology organizations will share their candid opinions on the current state of the U.S. - China relationship.
Each year, the Baucus Institute brings 4 to 6 students to the Dialogues to take notes during the conference (following Chatham House Rules), then organize those notes into a succinct and detailed document that is shared with participants. Students receive free lodging, a stipend, meals, and reimbursement for travel to/from Big Sky, MT.


How to Apply
Applications for Summer 2026 will open in October of 2025. Deadline to apply is Friday, January 23, 2026. A complete application includes the following:
A current resume
Must be up-to date and include all relevant experience.
An academic transcript (can be unofficial)
Showing grades through the most recent semester for which final grades are available. Graduate students should also send a transcript for their undergraduate studies.
An essay of no more than 500 words
Tell us why you want to be a Baucus Leader at Big Barn, including your interest in U.S.-China relations and international affairs.
Letter of recommendation
From a person who can speak with personal knowledge about your character and commitment to public service.
